Where the title comes from

In the operating room, a fiducial is a small marker fixed to the surface of the head before surgery. It does nothing by itself. But once the navigation system registers those markers, the surgeon can steer to a target hidden deep inside the skull, guided by points that never move. The visible marks exist so that the invisible can be reached.

That is the whole project, stated once. Each of these 500 plates reads like evidence pulled from that kind of instrument: cords pegged to nothing visible, figures caught mid-sequence, screens caught mid-read. The surface is legible. What it registers is not on the surface. Every marker holds more than it shows.

Created at the moment of mint

No fiducial marker exists before someone mints it. The seed of each work is derived from the mint transaction hash combined with the token number, which means the work is created in the instant the transaction confirms, and cannot exist a moment earlier. Nobody sees it first. Not the collector, not a curator, and not me.

I want to be clear that this was a choice with a price, not a default. Earlier versions of this system had features I loved: palettes that drifted gradually across the edition so consecutive markers harmonized, compositional handoffs between neighboring plates, registration marks that aligned across shared edges. All of that required knowing the works in advance. I removed every one of those features, deliberately, because in this culture creation at the moment of mint is not a gimmick. It is the honest version of the medium. A generative work that was pre-rendered and merely assigned is a print. A work that comes into existence because you acted is something else.

Randomness is the material, not the author

I have released generative work before, and collected it, and I know the fair criticism of the medium: that some projects are slot machines wearing a frame. Randomness sprays variation, the artist ships whatever comes out, and rarity tables stand in for intent.

This work uses randomness the way a painter uses turpentine: it is in everything, and it decides nothing important alone. The trait system is curated at every level. Thirty-eight palettes, each built by hand and weighted by hand, some deliberately scarce. Twelve compositional layouts. Density registers from whisper to saturated. Rare treatments like duotone, where the entire plate submits to a single hue and its shades, or the hand sketch, where the whole work renders as a pencil drawing. Field systems, faults that must run clean through the full height of a plate or not appear at all, palimpsests where an earlier drawing ghosts beneath the surface. Every one of these was auditioned, tuned, and in several cases cut entirely when it did not belong to the body of work. What ships is not what the dice produced. It is what survived curation.

And the traits do not merely coexist. They negotiate. Underneath the drawing sits what I call the energy of the plate: a continuously updated account of where weight, color, and incident have already accumulated. Each new element reads that account before it commits. Forms avoid smothering one another, quiet regions are defended, crowded regions push back. Composition on these plates is not scattered and hoped for. It is settled, element by element, the way a person actually composes.

The ropes tell your eyes where to go

Look at the cords. They are the most literal thing on any plate, drawn like rigging, pegged, sagging under believable weight, and they are doing exactly what the title promises. In surgery, surface fiducials guide you from what you can see to what you cannot. On these plates, the ropes and the geometry are that guidance system for your eye. A cord catches you at an anchor, carries you across a form, hands you to a ring, and the ring's ticks walk you around to the next departure. The compositions are built to be traversed, not scanned.

This is intentional down to the rules. Ropes are required to speak the plate's own language: they chain through the work's actual elements toward its hubs, never floating as decoration pinned to the margins. Where a plate organizes itself around a central figure, the cords run to its center, because a guide that leads nowhere is not a guide. If you feel your attention being walked around a marker, beneath its surface, toward something the plate never fully states, that is not an accident. That is the registration working on you.

The living moon

The composition of every marker is permanent. It will render identically in a hundred years. Except for one circle.

On every plate, a single circle keeps the real phase of the moon at the moment you are viewing it. Tonight all 500 markers, on every screen on Earth, show the same sky, because the phase is computed from time itself, which is the one input I allowed to stay alive. When the moon is full near the lunar node and the sky produces a total eclipse, every plate in the collection turns together. The works never change, and yet they are all watching something that does. I built it this way because a fixed image of the sky is a photograph, and I wanted an instrument. Fiducials exist to register a live signal. So the plates keep one.

Determinism, taken seriously

A claim underwrites all of this: same seed, same work, forever. Later on, after I had thought it was complete, I discovered that claim was not as absolute as I wanted. One internal system read rendered pixels to make placement decisions, and different rendering engines antialias pixels differently, so the same seed could settle differently in different browsers. Stable everywhere, but not identical everywhere. The surgical perfectionism in me would not allow it.

I paused. I rebuilt that system to be analytic, computing the plate's energy from geometry rather than from pixels, so that no decision in the work ever depends on how a particular machine happens to rasterize. It cost time and momentum, and it was not negotiable. If the work claims to be a fixed point, it has to actually be one. That is what a fiducial is.

Verify it yourself: the site's marker console re-derives any minted marker from its transaction, in your own browser, and the experiment page's atlas surveys 40,000 pulls of the seed space with live counts for every trait. Nothing here asks to be trusted.

What this body of work is

I have made algorithmic art for years and released collections that did well. This is the first one I consider a complete body of work: a single instrument, stated in a single vocabulary, where the mechanism, the metaphor, and the market structure all say the same thing. The works are created by the act of collecting them. Their surfaces are maps to what they conceal. And one circle on each of them holds still against the sky, registering, so that everything else can be found.
